From Spots to Floods: The Truth About Menorrhagia | Heavy | Prolonged Menstruation | Periods

Fibroids Hormone Balance Menstrual Menstrual support Period pain Periods

Hey girl,

Have you ever felt like your period decided to start its own metal band, with your uterus rocking out like it’s headlining a concert? Because, same. Let’s talk about the joys (ha!) of heavy menstrual bleeding—better known as menorrhagia if you want to get fancy at your next doctor’s appointment.

My Story or Yours? lol (Or Should I Say… Horror Show?)

Picture yourself friend wearing white jeans. Thinking you are living her best, stylish life (as YOU should be!)—until your period decides it is time for a crime scene. (Lol- I hope you have seen the Dexter series!)

That’s me, yeah!!! So, that morning, I vividly remember saying to my friend, “I’m fine. It’s just my period,” while clutching my sweater around my waist like it was a life jacket on the Titanic. It felt like my body was auditioning for a slasher film, and I was an innocent bystander in the splash zone.

If your Periods are Painful, we are dealing with another monster! Here is a tea for period pain,  or Period Pain Demolisher drops or just be aggressive in treating your periods with this combo

That was the day I truly discovered what it meant to have heavy menstrual bleeding. That was also the day I started hoarding period products like I was preparing for an apocalypse. Thank goodness for those the convenience stores and petrol stations that are so accommodating in such emergencies and have extra toilet paper!!!

What Counts as “Heavy” Anyway?

You might be thinking, “Wait, how do I know if it’s ‘heavy heavy’ or just a little extra?” Generally, if you’re soaking through a pad or tampon in under two hours, if your flow decides that a clot or two is acceptable dinner conversation, or if you need to double up on protection (pad + tampon) just to keep your pants safe, that’s a sign you might be dealing with heavy menstrual bleeding. If it’s interfering with your day-to-day life or you find yourself scheduling social events around your cycle, it’s worth looking into just to rule out that you don’t have fibroids or something worse!

You are fortunate if you get periods, not everyone is like that... If you dont get your periods, you might have PCOS (I am not diagnosing you) or even ovarian cysts!

Possible Causes of the Uterine Rock Concert

Menorrhagia can happen for a bunch of reasons. Here are a few:

1.  Hormonal Imbalances: Sometimes our hormones like to throw their own raves. An imbalance of oestrogen and progesterone can make the uterine lining thicker, leading to heavier shedding each month.

2. Fibroids or Polyps: Non-cancerous growths in the uterus can cause heavier bleeding. Imagine them as uninvited guests who show up at the party and double the chaos.

3. Thyroid Issues: Your thyroid hormones also have a say in how your periods behave. They’re like the behind-the-scenes manager for so many of your body’s functions, including your cycle.

4. Blood Clotting Problems: If your blood doesn’t clot correctly, you could experience heavier flows.

5. Birth Control or Medication: Some birth control methods (like the copper IUD) or certain meds can increase your flow.

And sometimes, it’s just your body’s way of saying, “Surprise, I do what I want!” (But it’s still good to get it checked out.)

So, What’s a Girl to Do?

Track Your Cycle: Keep a diary or use a period-tracking app (some of them come with cute flowers and motivational quotes—whatever gets you through). Jot down your flow, how many products you use, pain levels, and anything else that feels relevant. This info will be golden if you decide to see a healthcare provider.

If you dont get your periods and are not of menopause age or Pregnant, this is what you should get and to be on your regular cycle.

Talk to a Doctor: If your period is training for a marathon you didn’t sign up for, don’t suffer in silence. A doctor might run tests or do ultrasounds to figure out what’s happening.

Explore Treatment Options: Depending on the cause, your doctor might recommend:

1.     Hormonal Birth Control (pills, patches, IUDs) to regulate or lighten your flow.

2.     Medications to reduce bleeding or help with clotting.

3.     Lifestyle Changes: Stress management, diet, and exercise can sometimes help balance hormones. (Yes, yes, I know, easier said than done.)

4.     Surgical Procedures (in certain cases)—but we won’t go into detail unless you need it, because that’s a conversation for your doctor.

5.     Practice Self-Care: If you’re losing a lot of blood, keep an eye on your iron levels. Lean meats, leafy greens, and legumes are your friends. And if cooking isn’t your style, please take your multivitamins!!!

ABEG!!! Do not diagnose yourself with fibroids!!!! Buf if you have been diagnosed with fibroids by a Dr, this is what you should be using to shrink them naturally!

Emergency Supplies: My bag has at least three pads, two tampons, a small pack of wipes, and a spare pair of undies (just in case or just incase someone needs it, because I am a girls, gir!). It’s basically a survival kit.

When It Feels Like Too Much

Heavy periods can be both physically and emotionally draining. If you’re suddenly channeling a vampire’s dream supply, it can impact your confidence, social life, and mental health. Your body and mind are in this together, so don’t be afraid to:

1.     Reach out to friends (because complaining about cramps is basically bonding 101).

2.     Practice stress relief (yoga, deep breathing, or punching a pillow—it’s all valid).

3.     Seek professional help for emotional or mental health support if you feel overwhelmed.

Final Thoughts, From One Uterus to Another

Our periods can be moody, stubborn, and sometimes downright rude. But if you’re dealing with the heavy stuff that turns your bathroom visits into a scene from a horror movie, know you’re not alone. There are tons of us out here, living the heavy-flow life and finding our way through. Talk to a doctor, do your research, take care of yourself, and remember—white pants are not the enemy, they’re just… high risk.

Before I go, I just want to remind you to steam your vagina like your life depends on it!

Stay fierce, stay fabulous, and here’s to hoping our uteruses decide to chill out soon. Until then, if you see a friend dashing to the bathroom every hour, just give them a sympathetic nod. We’ve got this!
